2012 Colorado Dual Sport Adventure

Ray and I arrive in Denver in the afternoon. We rode to the Cabrini Shrine and after walking up 375 steps to the shrine we had an amazing view of the valley below including downtown Denver. From there we rode over Lookout Mountain Road to Buffalo Bills gravesite then down to Golden for dinner before arriving back to our motel.

Ray and I ride Argentine Pass and the backcountry between Alice and Central City.

Dave, Shawn, & Wes arrive!

They were delayed leaving Akron Canton Airport a couple of hours due to fog. After some maintenance on the trailer and the bikes Dave and I rode to a couple of miles east of Buena Vista where Wes and Shawn unloaded the Bergs. The four of us rode down Aspen Ridge to Salida where we met up with Ray and re-loaded the Bergs for the final leg to Gunnison.

Wes and Shawn ride the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area.

Dave, Ray, and I rode from Gunnison down to Lake City then over Cinnamon Pass to Silverton. Rode north on the Million Dollar Highway stopping for lunch in Ouray. After lunch we headed over Owl Creek Pass before arriving back in Gunnison.

The five inmates ride together for the first time. We ride over Cumberland Pass stopping for lunch at Frency’s in Tin Cup. After lunch we rode over Tin Cup Pass to Buena Vista. From Buena Vista we rode over Cottonwood Pass to Taylor Reservoir then back over Cumberland Pass to Waunita Pass Road before arriving back in Gunnison.

Wes and Shawn rode single track in the Taylor Park area.

Dave, Ray, and I rode to
Wheeler Geologic Area via Route 114 to the Carnero Pass Trail. We stopped for lunch in Del Norte before riding north on County Rd 63 near South Fork to National Forest Road 630 then connecting to the Wheeler Monument Trail 10 miles before the monument. After an exhausting hike to view the monument we rode the Monument Trail 25 miles back to Route 149 near Creede. We then rode the pavement back to Gunnison.

It was a day of rest and relaxation. We did a 30 mile loop before dinner on the Lost Canyon Trail.

Dave, Ray, and I met Wes and Shawn on Cement Creek Road. We then rode Reno Divide and Italian Creek Trails. Everyone except me rode to the top of Flag Mountain. I stayed at the bottom and kept an eye on the gear that was unloaded to lighten the bikes. After Flag Mountain Wes and Shawn rode single track on the Bergs and met us on Spring Creek Road before splitting off in Almont and returning to Gunnison.

Wes and Shawn rode single track on Fossil Ridge Trail. Dave, Ray, and I rode over Ohio and Kebler Passes on the way to Crystal Mill just east of Marble. After visiting the mill we rode up to see the Devils Punch Bowl. Dave and I waited near the bottom as Ray rode up the 1st bad section to the bridge and returned and suggested we not attempt Schofield Pass on the way back. We rode down Colorado 133 to Route 92 and returning to Gunnison on US 50.

We all left Gunnison for Denver. Wes and Shawn drove the truck and trailer while Dave, Ray, and I rode our bikes. We rode US 50 east then over Marshall Pass before stopping for fuel in Salida. We then rode the Aspen Ridge Trail up to US 285 before continuing to Denver dodging an electrical storm. Wes and Shawn arrived at the hotel shortly after us. We loaded the bikes in the trailer and Ray and I departed for Ohio. Dave, Shawn, and Wes spent the night before flying back the next morning. It was a wonderful adventure spending time with family and friends.
